1. What is happening with Club Ratings?

Your Club has adopted the Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR) framework to enable members to establish or improve their Club Rating.

2. Why is NPC using DUPR?

Nanaimo Pickleball Club has adopted the DUPR system to use as an internal club rating system.  NPC will help club members to achieve club ratings by regularly hosting DUPR play sessions.  The aim is to allow all members to enjoy playing pickleball with partners and other players who have similar skills and experience. Registering with DUPR and recording game scores on a periodic basis will allow members to have a fair and reasonably accurate skill level rating.

3. What is DUPR?

DUPR is a skill level rating system. All players, regardless of their age, gender, location, or skill, are rated on the same scale, based on their game results.
DUPR is free to register, and anyone can have a rating. Individuals, clubs, leagues and tournaments can use DUPR.

4. Will all club play sessions be DUPR sessions?

No, approximately 1/2 of club sessions are not DUPR sessions, but the Club does schedule DUPR Rating sessions for members to establish their club ratings.
These sessions are  attended by members seeking to raise their DUPR rating and/or club rating. These DUPR club sessions may tend to be a bit more competitive than regular Recreational club play.

5. Do I need to join DUPR now?

  • Yes if you are a 2.5 club self-accessed/club rated player.
  • Yes if you want to increase your club rating.
  • Not if you don't want to improve your club rating.
  • Not if you want to get a club rating another way(put in Link to Skill Assessment and Ratings).
  • Yes, if you want to use a DUPR rating as a basis for a new or higher club rating.
  • Yes, if you want to play in any NPC DUPR play sessions, perhaps to just find out what your DUPR rating would be, or just because DUPR play sessions have good competitive play.

6. What do I need to do BEFORE signing up for an NPC DUPR rating session or DUPR play session?

  1. Set up a DUPR account
  2. Join NPC on DUPR
Answers to the next two questions will walk you through the easy steps to do both.

7. How do I set up a DUPR account?

  1. NOTE: DUPR is free software for the users and you DO NOT have to enter any credit card information when creating your account or entering scores.
  2. Go to DUPR, then press Signup; or, from the same DUPR webpage, download the DUPR app to your device, open the app, and press Signup.
  3. At the "Claim Your Account" screen, enter your name and see if you already have a DUPR account; claim it if you do.
  4. If you don't have a DUPR account, press Create an Account and fill in the player details.
  5. Be sure to use the same first and last name and email address as your NPC membership.
  6. Verify your email address by following the instructions in the email sent to you by DUPR.
NOTE: When you create a new Account you may have a NR for a rating, unless you have been in a tournament where scores were inputted to the DUPR system. If you see a NR this means you have not played any games and have “No Rating “until you start playing / recording games in DUPR.

8. How do I join NPC on DUPR?

  1. Log in to your DUPR account and press the "Play" menu item.
  2. On the Play page, ensure that the button "Clubs" is highlighted, not "Events".
  3. Enter “Nanaimo Pickleball Club” in the search box.
  4. Select the Nanaimo Pickleball Club
  5. On the Nanaimo Pickleball Club page, press the "Join Club" button.

•Once you apply to Join NPC on DUPR, please wait two days until you are verified.

9. Is there a cost to join DUPR or NPC on DUPR?

No, both are free. Of course, you must already have an NPC membership via this website before an administrator will admit you to NPC on DUPR.

10. Is one club DUPR rating session sufficient to get a DUPR rating and have it recognized by the club?

No. You will likely get an initial DUPR rating within a day of playing in your first session, but NPC will not accept a DUPR rating as a club rating until  your DUPR Reliability is at least 60%.  On Tuesdays your DUPR Reliability will be updated. (Note that if you self-enter your own DUPR games, it will take many, many games for your DUPR rating to reach a Reliability of 60%.)

11. What is DUPR Reliability?

DUPR has a Reliability indicator that specifies, in percentage terms, the confidence that DUPR has in the accuracy of the cited rating for a player.
In the following snippet of a player's DUPR performance page, you can see this person currently has a Doubles DUPR rating of 5.015 and a Reliability indicator of 74 out of 100. So DUPR has 74% confidence in the 5.015 rating.
NPC requires a member's DUPR rating to have a Reliability of at least 60%, if the member wishes to use that DUPR rating as a basis for:
  • modifying your club rating.
  • the player would make a Rating Change Request in writing to NPC.
To boost your DUPR Reliability, do one or more of the following:
  • play in DUPR games organized by NPC or another venue or club, as such club entered games will raise your DUPR reliability much faster than Recreational player-entered games,
  • enter more games into DUPR -- recency of games also counts;
  • play with a variety of  players of similar skill level and
  •  play with others who already have a high DUPR Reliability.

12. Can I keep my current club rating?

Yes. NPC will not lower club ratings unless you specifically ask for a lower rating. This applies even if you have a lower DUPR rating than your current club level, because we are grandfathering (extending) previous club ratings in recognition of the skill level already achieved and used to earn that previous club rating.
We also know that a player's DUPR rating can fluctuate dramatically if that player consistently plays others with higher skills or with lower skills. This means that a player may have a DUPR rating that is, temporarily, skewed too high or too low in relation to that player's actual skill level. This is another reason NPC will not change your current skill level unless you ask for it.

13. Can I record game scores in DUPR myself, based on non-club play?

Yes, but DUPR only accepts scores if all game players have DUPR accounts and if these other players verify the entered score. Please ensure all players agree to have that game’s scores entered into DUPR before the game starts.

For individual use, all players must verbally agree to record the score in the DUPR App. When the game finishes one player enters the score and the names of the players, and DUPR starts calculating the skill levels of all participants. (All players must already have a DUPR profile (account), and all players must verify the score when asked by DUPR.)  Players will receive confirmation by email and the players must go to their DUPR account to verify the scores.
The more games you record in DUPR, the more accurate and more consistent your skill level rating.
DUPR's rating algorithm considers several factors to calculate a skill level. Factors include how many points your team scored in a game, the ratings of your partner and opponents, whether you won or lost, and whether it was a recreational game score or a more competitive club, league or tournament score.
We have also found that, as with other similar rating systems,  one's DUPR rating can be skewed down if you consistently play DUPR games with players who are more skilled than you, or can be skewed up if you consistently play with others who are less skilled than you. There are two lessons from this:
  1. The most accurate rating results from playing and recording games with a variety of players within your skill level.
  2. Don't be dismayed if your DUPR rating is occasionally below your "real" skill level or club skill level. (In NPC, you will NOT lose your club rating!)
With the initial use of DUPR, do not be dismayed if your rating fluctuates. As you get closer to 60% Reliability, you should be closer to an accurate rating.

14. Can any CLUB PLAY game scores be entered into DUPR?

No. Club play sessions will not be entered into DUPR unless the session is specifically designated as DUPR play. DUPR games tend to be competitive, like a tournament game, and some members do not want this for regular play.

15. What are Types of DUPR Competitions?

Different types of matches count more towards your rating. For example, recreational matches have less of an impact on your rating, while DUPR club matches and director uploaded tournaments have more of an impact.

16. When is your DUPR rating updated?

Your rating updates automatically every time a match result is shared with DUPR. Every type of match - club, tournament, league and recreational - can count for your rating.
DUPR NPC club matches and tournament matches from our partners have the most impact on your rating. Recreational matches may be added manually using DUPR’s “Add a Match” feature. All players must validate the score for it to take effect. Recreational matches have less of an impact on your rating. DUPR takes player integrity very seriously and will penalize community members who report false information.

17. How does the Doubles rating work?

DUPR uses individual player ratings to calculate a team rating—the average of each player’s DUPR. This is then used to determine the win probability for each team.
-Underdog Wins? Big Gains. If your team wins against the odds, your rating increases more
.-Expected Wins? Steady Growth. Winning as the favourite means smaller gains.
-Each player’s rating adjustment depends on the number of matches they’ve played and how recent those matches are.
-Play regularly to keep your rating dynamic and reflective of your current skill!

18. What happened to my Pickleball Brackets rating?

Pickleball Brackets website became Pickleball.com. When it did this it removed the ability for clubs to track individuals Bracket rating.  Unfortunately they left all users around the world with no way to retrieve or continue with the rating system they used.  They have changed to more of a Tournament company and now also use DUPR full time for all of their tournament ranking.
